Bachelor Degree Programs

Are you looking into bachelor degree programs from a vocational school? While not all trade schools or community colleges offer bachelor degrees, a vocational training program or online school may be your stepping stone to a bachelor degree from a four-year college or university.

Bachelor degree programs usually require a minimum of 120 to 150 semester credit hours and are often divided into two main types - Bachelor of Arts (B.A. or A.B.) and Bachelor of Science (B.S. or B.Sc.), among others. Generally, the difference between associate degrees and bachelor degree programs is the time involved and course of study.

A few degree programs found at trade schools are geared toward credit transfer, and may include numerous fields of study, such as Accounting & Finance, Advertising, Art & Design, Business Administration, Business Management, Computer Information Systems, Criminal Justice, Information Technology (IT), Marketing & Sales, Paralegal, and many others.

Since most community colleges or 2-year institutions merely lay the foundation for students to achieve a bachelor's degree, current efforts are underway to prompt vocational training schools to offer bachelor degree programs (in addition to associate degrees, certificates and diplomas). However, there are a few vocational training schools that do currently provide bachelor degree programs in select courses of study, including Education, Information Technology (IT), and Nursing.

A Distance Learning Bachelors Degree Can Open Doors

When life has to go on while college classes are taken, turning to the Internet can really help. A distance learning bachelors degree can open doors while allowing students to matriculate on their own schedules.

Distance learning bachelors degree programs used to only be offered in a few fields and by a few "select," unknown institutions. That is simply not the case anymore. Students interested in earning this very important, employment-benefiting degree will soon find there are plenty of options out there now. There's no reason to expect to have to go to class all the time to earn a valuable bachelors degree.

Distance learning, for those who are unclear, involves college classes that are taken over the Internet. Books might be mailed to a students' door and access to professors is also still generally available via chat, forums, telephone or in person, but the bulk or all of the material is handled online. The type of programs available for full degrees will vary. Some of the most common include such areas of concentration as business and accounting, education and criminal justice, and history and theology.

The benefits to this type of learning situation can be many, especially for those without the time to physically attend classes. Some of the perks can include anytime learning, accredited courses, sometimes discounted fees and a variety of program offerings. Many students find this is one of the best options for them to completely earn a degree or fill in needed classes on a better time schedule.

Looking for the best distance learning bachelors degree programs can be a little tricky, but the truth is this trend is growing in leaps and bounds. Even some of the Ivy League schools are offering at least a few classes online.

The places to look for distance learning bachelors degree programs include:

* State universities. Many state-funded universities offer online degree programs, or at least classes. It is possible for students to take a mix of these classes in some locations or to completely finish a degree online in others.

* Private colleges. Accredited, private institutions are often opening their doors, so to say, to online students. How many or few classes they will allow online toward a degree will vary. Some colleges allow for a degree-seeking student to go from start to finish online.

* Specialty schools. Many specialty schools, such as arts institutions, business colleges and more, have gone online in a lot of cases. Some locations offer complete course work online, others provide this opportunity for only a few classes.

* Junior colleges. Many of these typically lower-priced institutions are also available for students online.

As long as they come from accredited institutions of higher learning, distance learning bachelors degree programs carry a lot of weight in the real world. This didn't used to always be the case, but the reality is as this "trend" sets into common practice, more and more people are understanding the Internet can be a powerful tool for teaching and learning.

Tips on How to Get the Best Bachelor of Accounting Degree Online

Getting a bachelor of accounting degree online through the Internet isn't as hard as it was a few years ago. An opportunity like this is especially convenient for working students, or working adults who want to upgrade themselves. It helps to learn at your own pace, at your own time.

Making the Final Decision on Distance Learning

Naturally, there are those kinds of students who just automatically excel over all the others. This is the most often the case with students getting a bachelor of accounting degree online. This is because even before beginning the course, they are already self-motivated and can do things without people telling them to. They set their own goals and follow the plans that they make for themselves.

So Much Opportunities Online -- Which to Choose?

Just because there are many degrees that you can take online, it's not the time to go shopping-happy. First, you need to figure out what you want to achieve in the long run. Where do you want to work? How much do you want to earn? Is accountancy a possible option that you'd take? Would you want to be professionally certified by becoming a CPA?

Once you have the answers to these questions and the important information to back them up, then you're prepared to look for the right school for you. Be mindful of certain schools that don't prepare their students for any CPA certification or any work with the government. Once you find a potential school, give them a call and ask the questions you need answers to.

Check For Appropriate Accreditation

The bachelor of accounting degree online programs offered by schools proliferate all over the Internet, and each one of them are different. Some aren't up to par with what you want to achieve, and you have to make sure they have the right licenses to teach and the appropriate accreditations. Look for a school that's accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).

Ivy League universities such as the Harvard Business School don't offer a bachelor of accounting degree online. However, there is one college that is not as prestigious as Harvard but is just as respected and accredited by students worldwide -- DeVry. A degree from the DeVry curriculum would be the same as getting a degree from a state university.

Will Getting A Degree Online Change Traditional Colleges?

Despite the explosion of publicity that has grown up around the newly popular cyber studies format, many educational authorities continue to wonder whether or not the online Bachelor's degree programs offered by an increasing number of colleges and universities should be judged as an unmitigated success. The internet has sparked so many changes to the world, rendering areas of life from home entertainment to the gathering of information utterly unrecognizable within a generation, that it's perfectly understandable for media commentators to spin fantasies about the potential of the medium. Yes, the online Bachelor's degree will be substantially more cost effective than even the cheapest brick and mortar alternatives, the malleability of the scheduling that cyber studies provide could not possibly be matched by the traditional pillars of academia, but let's not get carried away.

The story of James Callie, a marketing professional who left the University of Vermont shortly after his sophomore year with sixty eight transferable credit hours (and who later earned his online Bachelor's degree in a little over a year and a half for a pittance), has been the norm for lifestyle journalists trying to elaborate a larger meaning. Although Callie ended up getting a degree online for literally hundreds of dollars -- thanks to the immense amount of credits that he brought to the table -- his story is far from typical. Not only must students weighing their options treat such tales of immediate cost-free satisfaction with all due suspicion, the media should caution curious pupils to do their own voyage of discovery before automatically presuming that the internet academia option would be equally beneficial.

Furthermore, the news coverage of cyber studies tends to gloss over the extreme differences that separate the online Associate's degree -- a tried and true alternative that has indeed allowed countless Americans to accelerate their career improvements and successfully pass such bureaucratic hurdles as, say, the Certified Professional Accountant's exam without ever missing a day's work -- from the far more rarefied realm of the online Master's degree. Some of the virtual campuses hiding around the World Wide Web specifically advertise their course load as part of a business plan, and, by doing so, neatly fashion a runaround from charges of operating an unaccredited institution of higher learning. Still, uninitiated prospective students who aren't entirely familiar with the technicalities of the educational establishment may end up wasting their time and money (however relatively little of each, compared to the demands of an actual university).

While it would be foolish to suggest that all or even most of the students getting a degree online would be making a mistake by trusting a cyber studies provider, there are undeniable worries that must still be addressed before, as a society, we can so easily push the online Bachelor's degree as the logical conclusion of academic trends post-information revolution. Computers have without a doubt aided the acquisition of knowledge for Americans of all demographics, and, following the inevitably bumpy steps to maturation as administrators and faculty further comprehend the dynamics of the digitized curriculum, teaching over the internet shall sooner or later outgrow the early kinks: even, yes, for the online Master's degree (in certain subjects, at least). At the same, time, though we should not seek to downplay the dangers inherent in leaping forward too quickly to incorporate novelty for the sake of novelty.

Online Bachelor Degree Costs - Is the Cost of a Degree Actually Worth It? (A Case Study)

Obtaining a bachelor degree qualification can certainly be a positive step towards an enjoyable and successful career but it has significant educational costs that need to be considered. How does the investment in your education actually pay off in the long run financially? This article looks at how the numbers stack up.

Firstly, we must look at online bachelor degree costs. The direct cost of education can range anywhere from $2000 to $30,000 a year at some high profile private schools. But for the purpose of this article we are going to use an average figure of $6,600 per year plus another $1000 per year for textbooks and supplies which brings us to $7600 per year. For a 4 year course the total cost is $30,400. Lets round that down to $30,000 to keep it simple.

The direct cost of the education is not the main expense however. The major cost (which is not always considered) is the additional cost (or income loss) of the student not working full time while studying. By choosing to go to college or university to obtain a degree the student's ability to get a start in his or her chosen career is delayed by a minimum of four years. With this in mind the additional cost of lost income could easily add up to over $100,000 while you are studying for your bachelors degree. For the sake of this article lets use $80,000 or $20,000 per year.

This gives us a total online bachelor degree cost of $110,000. Quite significant money indeed. But does it pay off?

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics recently published data showing that during the first quarter of 2008 full time professionals with bachelors degrees earned a median weekly salary of $1,108 while workers who only had high school diplomas earned a median weekly salary of $615. However I believe this does not give a true indication of the earnings increase the degree actually contributed to as in general the type of people who earn degrees would probably earn an above average wage with or without the degree. So for this discussion I will increase the non-degree income by 50% to account for this which equates to a weekly income of $922.

On this basis the degree holders earn on average an additional $186 per week or an annual increase of $9672. So without taking into account other factors such as taxation and inflation it would take 11 years and 4 months for the initial online bachelor degree cost to be covered by the increased earning potential it provides. Over the average working lifespan of 40 years the degree would have earned an additional $386,880. This is more than three times the additional cost!
